British Columbia is a good place to build a boiler company if you resist the urge to cover the whole map. The Lower Mainland and southern Vancouver Island are dense, older markets where many homes and low-rise buildings still run on hot-water heat, and owners value someone reliable. The Interior and the North are colder, more spread out and more loyal once you earn trust. The plan is different for each.
The BC boiler market
Gas heated 42% of BC households as their main system in 2023, and electricity 36%, by Statistics Canada's count. That is a more mixed picture than the Prairies, and it means a BC boiler company often meets three kinds of customer: gas boiler owners who want repair or replacement, owners of older systems considering a combi, and people comparing a boiler with a heat pump.
The largest markets are Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby and Richmond, with Abbotsford, Coquitlam, Kelowna and Saanich close behind. For a start-up, the useful unit is not the city but the cluster of neighbourhoods you can reach within 30 minutes. Bridges and tunnels make drive times in Metro Vancouver lopsided, so a base in Burnaby serves a very different area at 8 a.m. than at 2 p.m.
Climate and the season you plan around
The southwest coast has mild, wet winters. Heating demand starts later and is less extreme than elsewhere in Canada, which means fewer panic calls and more planned replacements. The Interior and the North have much longer, colder heating seasons, with no-heat calls that cannot wait.
For a coastal start-up, that makes the care plan especially important: there is no deep-winter rush big enough to carry the year. In the Interior, the first cold snap can bring more calls than one technician can answer, so the hiring trigger needs to be set before October.
Regulators to know
- Technical Safety BC oversees gas, boilers and pressure vessels, and electrical work, and licenses gas and electrical contractors. A start-up's licensing questions begin here.
- SkilledTradesBC runs apprenticeship and the province's compulsory trades. As of October 2026, its list includes Steamfitter/Pipefitter, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic, Sheet Metal Worker and Gasfitter Class A and Class B, among others.
- BC Registries and Online Services is where you register a business name or company.
We link and summarise; we give no compliance advice. Confirm your own obligations with the regulator.
Programs that shape demand, as of October 2026
The province's Better Homes BC Energy Savings Program offers income-qualified rebates focused on heat pumps and envelope upgrades, and its requirements changed for invoices dated on or after July 6, 2026. For a boiler company, the practical point is that some of your customers will be weighing a rebated heat pump against a boiler replacement. Your website and quotes should explain the trade-off honestly, without promising rebates you do not administer. Programs change, so confirm current terms with the administrator before mentioning them.
Starting, buying or scaling in BC
Starting. Pick three to six neighbourhoods and become the obvious boiler company there. A Google Business Profile with a precise service area, pages for each community, and reviews from your first customers will beat a broad "Lower Mainland" approach. Our first-year marketing plan is built for this.
Buying. BC has many owner-operated boiler shops whose founders are approaching retirement. Test the customer base and the agreement book before you agree on price; our buy-side review covers what to check, and BizSell.ca handles the sale side.
Scaling. With compulsory certification in effect for key trades, recruiting is a planning issue, not an afterthought. Start in spring; see technician recruiting.
Results from our HVAC work in BC include GasBoilers.ca, a gas-boiler division built for CANRO Heat that now serves 26+ BC communities. Fees for BC clients are plus 5% GST, and provincial sales tax where it applies to the service; see pricing.
Frequently asked questions
Do my technicians need compulsory certification in BC?
Several mechanical trades now require certification or apprentice registration in BC, including Steamfitter/Pipefitter and Gasfitter Class A and B. Check SkilledTradesBC's compulsory trades page for the current list and your own situation.
Is Metro Vancouver too competitive for a new boiler company?
It is competitive for broad terms, but much less so for specific boiler work in a tight set of neighbourhoods. A clear specialty and a small, well-served area give a new company a realistic way in.
What sales tax applies to your services in BC?
5% GST, plus provincial sales tax where it applies to the service. Your accountant can confirm what applies to you.
